What will a collaborative divorce cost?

by Geraldine Hess

It will cost less than taking your case to court.  The cost depends on how much work your case entails.

  • Do you just need attorneys assisting you?
  • Are there complicated financial issues?
  • Do you and your spouse disagree on everything - custody, support, and property division or just property division?
  • Do you need other professionals involved in your case such as a financial neutral or a coach?

In collaborative divorce, you first hire your attorney.  It is your attorney’s job to explain to you to the options regarding how to proceed with your collaborative divorce.  When you are reviewing those options with your attorney, you should ask how those choices are going to impact the cost of your divorce.  It is an opportunity to think about what is really important to you and the amount of money you are willing to spend to pursue those priorities.

You are in the driver's seat of your divorce in collaborative - you and your spouse can make the process cost-efficient.
